14 Days of Love: Loads of Love

HAPPY Valentine's DAY

Carrie of Crafty Night Owls is as sweet in person as she is on her blog! I'm thrilled (and totally nervous) to post today as part of her fun 14 Days of Love series! I love the month of February for all of its incredible love-inspired recipes, romantic date ideas, and Valentine projects with a touch of shimmer and sparkle. Also, no Valentine's Day is complete without chocolate-covered strawberries!

I'll be spending the day with three handsome guys!

As I sat brainstorming in preparation for Carrie's fun 14 Days of Love series, one idea in particular materialized and stuck. Frankly, it wasn't what I was expecting to stick. And yet, the more I thought about it the more I loved it as a way to add a little extra to an otherwise very ordinary task!

I love visiting Disney's parks. Between visits sometimes I even long for that brief but complete escape from everyday pressures and the outside world. I love dedicating an entire day to playing with my kids, laughing with my husband, and watching their faces light up. I love feeling a bit 'lost' in another world, and noticing some small magical detail. I especially love it when my boys are so tired after a day at Disneyland they have no will to fight sleep!

what if Home felt like this?

Our motto for our blog became Bring the Magic Home. Wherever Home may be. Find your magic. Your excitement, and imagination. Find your joy and bring it home. Give marriage and motherhood your careful attention.

 Loads of Love

for Valentine's Day
Loads of Love laundry crates

As one job I never seem to catch up with, I can't say I love doing laundry. Quite often, I'm still doing laundry after I've put my boys to bed. And once they're in bed and quiet, I try not to mess with a good thing!

Of course this means their piles of folded clothes end up just outside of their bedroom doors on the floor. I say this hoping someone else does this too! There was definitely room for improvement here.

Wood Laundry Crates Tutorial

1|
Sand down a pair of unfinished wood crates
I love the look of a wood crate, and you have so many design options.
Plastic containers can break, and fabric bins can lose their shape.
Wood is fairly easy to fix and freshen up.

2|
Stain
After brushing away all of the sawdust, I applied
Minwax Express Color Wiping Stain and Finish in Walnut
to the crate with 'Wiping Cloths' [aka. t-shirt scraps].
I love how simple to use this stain is. Seriously. Wipe on, wipe off.

Use a Q-Tip or a small, inexpensive craft foam brush|paintbrush
to apply the stain between the slats of the crate.

3|
Paint
For a combination of different finishes, I used an inexpensive craft foam brush
to apply a double coat of semi-gloss Glidden [latex] paint
on the inside of the crate.
[I had the paint on-hand for an upcoming project!]

The finishing touches
I thought a hint of shimmer would be fun, so
I painted just the top edges with a gold metallic acrylic craft paint.

The fun of this project really comes with the little extras you can leave!

Wishing you the happiest of Valentine's Days

  1. Cute idea Audra! I too leave piles of folded clothes outside my daughters door when she is sleeping. This is a perfect solution!

  2. Yup, totally leave the folded laundry outside their doors over here. Mostly because we want a couch to sit on for couple time. :)

Adding the gold sounds like a fun touch! How are they working out so far?

    1. It's working great. The clothes are staying in the crate until morning when I have a chance to put them away. Vs. getting kicked around and inevitably thrown back into the laundry because I can't remember if I washed them or not! :)
