It's true that Groundhog Day and Superbowl Sunday XLVIII [Sixty-Eight] fall on the same day this year, which makes Saturday night a perfect night for a little comedy and a little romance in celebration of Groundhog Day!
About Groundhog Day
Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania is home to the official groundhog, "Punxsutawney Phil." Pennsylvania's earliest settlers carried the legend|tradition behind Groundhog Day with them from Germany. According to ancient weather lore, when Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow February 2nd if he sees his shadow we can expect 6 more weeks of winter. If he doesn't see his shadow, we can look forward to an early spring! As whimsical as it may seem, did you know Groundhog Day (the celebration) will be a 127 years old February 2nd?! Punxsutawney Phil's 2014 prediction will be the 127th since the first official trek to Gobbler's Knob on February 2nd, 1887.
Groundhog Day (the movie)
This year the movie Groundhog Day will celebrate its 21st anniversary, and I still can't help but giggle at Bill Murray as the sour and self-centered weatherman who wakes up each morning to learn it's still Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney. Watching Hubby giggle through it has to be my favorite Groundhog Day tradition!

Groundhog Day Themed Decor
Here's a quick tutorial for how to recreate Phil's B&B nightstand decor for your Date Night In - which of course wouldn't be complete without the infamous flip alarm clock!
I've also seen heart-shaped paper doiles in grocery stores in the Valentine's Day decor section.
◊ A cheap glass vase | Walmart craft section
◊ A few pink roses, faux or fresh
The small pink roses I used are fresh and all on one stem for about $3 from the grocery store Floral section.
When it comes to the infamous flip clock, the very same model can be had. But I opted for a less expensive, crafty representation of this -

Numbers on a flip alarm clock
|
◊ A white rectangular photo frame | Hobby Lobby
◊ A 12x12 sheet of black cardstock
◊ A large Silver Metallic Sharpie Permanent Marker◊ A fine silver gel pen | Silver Metallic Sharpie Permanent Marker
◊ A fine black Sharpie Permanent Marker
◊ Reflective house numbers | Walmart for about $0.60 each
I chose 5:59 as the time for my clock, but 6:00 works too as the time Phil's flip alarm clock sounds.
How To
◊ To cut your black cardstock to size, remove the glass from your photo frame and trace it. Then trim a thin piece off one width edge to make it fit.
◊ If you're not using a white decal for your numbers, cut your numbers out and trace them onto your black cardstock with your fine silver pen|marker. This will give you a more precise edge.
◊ Fill in your outlined numbers with your large silver marker. Otherwise, you'll be coloring a long time!
◊ To give your numbers the look of a flip alarm clock, using a straight edge and your fine black marker draw a straight line through all three numbers.
◊ Add "AM" to the left of the hour.
